Volkswagen is recalling more than 79,000 examples of its ID.4 electric SUV over a software issue that may affect the vehicles’ instrument panel display.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-23 ID.4 electric SUVs. The software issue may cause the instrument panel to spontaneously reset or not boot at all, resulting in a loss of the speedometer information or rearview camera image .

Dealers will update the vehicle software for free. Volkswagen will notify owners July 12, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-893-5298 (Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 919A), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
