Kia’s Transition to NACS

The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation as it shifts from the Combined Charging System (CCS) port to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, which was pioneered by Tesla. This transition is set to impact electric vehicle (EV) owners, especially those who have purchased models with CCS ports. Starting with vehicles assembled in 2025, most automakers will adopt the NACS port, leaving early EV adopters with the existing CCS infrastructure.

Free NACS Adapters for Kia Customers

In a bid to assist existing EV owners, Kia has announced the provision of free NACS charging adapters for specific customers. This offer applies to individuals who have purchased a new Kia EV9 or Kia EV6 after September 4, 2024. Eligible customers will receive their adapters by early 2025, enhancing access to NACS-equipped DC fast chargers, which Kia expects will be accessible starting January 15, 2025.

Details on Adapter Types

Kia is providing three different types of adapters to accommodate the diverse needs of their EV owners. The NACS-to-CCS adapter allows current Kia electric vehicles to utilize the upcoming NACS-style DC fast chargers, including Tesla Superchargers. Additionally, there is a CCS-to-NACS adapter for future Kia models equipped with the NACS port, and a J1772-to-NACS adapter enabling charging on existing level 2 AC chargers. As part of the upgrade in early 2025, Kia will also implement a vehicle software update that allows EV owners to access charging options through the Kia Access app, improving the overall charging experience.
