Morgan’s Return to the U.S.

After nearly two decades, the Morgan Plus Four is set to make a comeback in the United States, as confirmed on Thursday. This model will hit the U.S. market in early 2025, marking a significant milestone for both Morgan and car enthusiasts. Following the receipt of official federal approval, the Plus Four will become the first four-wheeled Morgan available in the States in nearly 20 years.

Pricing and Exclusivity

The Plus Four will carry a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $84,995. At first glance, this price may seem steep for a vehicle equipped with an inline-four engine and smaller dimensions than a Mazda MX-5 Miata. However, from a different perspective, the Plus Four offers an opportunity to own one of the cheapest handbuilt cars globally. Each unit features hand-formed aluminum bodywork resting on a meticulously crafted ash timber frame, assuring a unique heritage that mass-produced vehicles lack.

Approval Challenges and Future Prospects

One of the major hurdles Morgan faced was navigating the complexities of U.S. automotive regulations. Becoming the first automaker to secure approval for a modern replica of a classic car, the Plus Four is exempt from many modern safety standards, simplifying the production process. Morgan was still required to develop a new onboard diagnostics system for the BMW-sourced 2.0-liter engine to meet California Air Resources Board regulations. As this requirement has been met, the Plus Four will now be available alongside the Super 3 tricycle, marketed under motorcycle standards. Looking ahead, this success raises questions about whether other modernized versions of classic non-American cars might follow suit in the U.S. market.
