Nissan’s Trademark Filing Sparks Speculation

As we indulged in holiday treats, Nissan was quietly moving ahead with a trademark application for the beloved Xterra name. Submitted on December 23 to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), this filing has fueled discussions on the potential revival of the Xterra model. The application specifically requests a trademark for “motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, sport utility vehicles, and structural parts thereof,” signaling a serious intent regarding the Xterra brand.

A Glimpse at Previous Trademarks

This latest application references two previously approved trademarks, including one from 2003 that covered a specific script style associated with the vehicle. The new request, however, is for the name Xterra in “standard characters,” free from any design constraints. This approval is valid through August 31, 2027, leaving ample time for Nissan’s strategy to unfold.

What Could a Comeback Mean?

While Nissan ceased selling the Xterra in North America back in 2015, the name has continued to thrive in the Middle East. The regional model is based on Nissan’s Navara pickup, which differs significantly from the Frontier-based Xterra of yore. Should Nissan decide to re-enter the North American 4×4 market, it faces not just challenges but also options. Sticking to the Navara-based model is one potential route, but the nostalgic appeal of a Frontier-based Xterra cannot be ignored. Furthermore, strategic partnerships, such as a potential collaboration with Honda, could pave the way for a fresh take on the Xterra, perhaps even leveraging the Honda Passport’s platform. One thing remains certain: enthusiasts are keen for the return of iconic features like the roof-mounted storage compartment.
