Overview of the Jeep Cherokee Recall

Stellantis has announced its first major recall of the year, affecting more than 63,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs. The recall targets models from 2017 to 2019 due to a critical issue with the power transfer unit (PTU), which could potentially lead to a loss of drive power or compromise the vehicle’s park function.

Details of the Transmission Issue

The defect involves an incorrectly set input shaft snap ring within the PTU. This misalignment allows for unexpected movement of the input shaft, which can result in premature wear of the range shift sleeve or damage to the spline and range fork. As a consequence, affected vehicles are at risk for sudden loss of drive power or an inability to remain in park while stationary. Such conditions could heighten the danger of accidents and injuries on the road.

Next Steps for Affected Owners

Stellantis plans to notify Jeep owners starting February 13, providing them with information about the recall and future remedies. In the meantime, owners with questions are encouraged to reach out to Stellantis directly at 800-853-1403 or connect with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236. Additionally, owners can visit the NHTSA’s website to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for specific details regarding their vehicle and its status related to this recall.
