The Return of Honda to Formula 1

After a brief hiatus, Honda is set to make its much-anticipated return to Formula 1 in 2026. The Japanese automotive giant’s partnership with Aston Martin makes the British team a Honda works team, bringing excitement to fans and stakeholders alike. However, as with any comeback, there are significant hurdles to overcome.

Struggles in Development

In a candid discussion at the 2025 Rolex 24, Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) President Koji Watanabe revealed that the company has been struggling with the development of its new power unit (PU). This isn’t just a Honda-exclusive issue, as other new entrants to the sport are facing similar challenges. The complexity of the 2026 regulations, which emphasize electrification and sustainability, has sent every team back to the drawing board.

The Bigger Picture

While Honda currently supplies power units for Red Bull Racing, the latter is shifting gears towards its own PU program in partnership with Ford. This pivot adds more pressure on Honda to deliver a competitive unit by 2026. The road ahead is undoubtedly fraught with challenges, but it also presents an opportunity for innovation in line with Honda’s corporate goals of efficiency and sustainability.

As the F1 community gears up for the new regulations, fans will be watching closely to see how Honda manages to navigate these turbulent waters. Will they emerge triumphant, or will their return be marked by setbacks? Time will tell.
