Overview of the Recall

General Motors (GM) has announced a significant recall affecting approximately 877,000 trucks and full-size SUVs due to potential defects in their 6.2-liter V-8 engines. This massive recall impacts notable models such as the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Silverado, and GMC Yukon, which may experience power loss or complete engine failure. As a proactive measure, GM has also implemented a stop-sale order for affected vehicles in dealer inventory.

Background on Engine Issues

The recall follows an investigation launched earlier this year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With over 39 complaints regarding engine failures reported, the NHTSA’s inquiry highlights serious concerns about the reliability of GM’s 6.2-liter V-8 engine in several vehicles. Models manufactured between 2021 and 2024 are significantly affected, including the Cadillac Escalade models, Chevy Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL.

Inspection and Repair Process

The issue arises from internal parts of the engine, specifically the crankshaft and connecting rods, which were damaged during production. GM mandates that all affected vehicles undergo a thorough inspection. If a vehicle passes inspection, dealers are required to replace the oil filter, oil cap, and fill the engine with higher-viscosity 0W-40 oil, as noted in GM’s internal service bulletins. In cases where vehicles do not pass inspection, repairs or replacements will be executed accordingly.
