Kia had a relatively quiet end to 2023 on the safety front. Its last significant missive of the year was for the Sorento SUV, for which nearly 80,000 vehicles are involved.

Affected Sorentos are limited only to the 2011 model year. Software for the knock sensor detection system was not installed at the time of manufacture. As a result, an engine compartment fire may occur while driving, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will install the software and replace the engine, as necessary, for free. Kia will begin sending owner notification letters Feb. 9, but those with further questions in the meantime can call the company at 800-333-4542 (recall number SC291), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
