The Introduction of Kia EV9’s Third Row

The new Kia EV9 has made waves in the automotive industry as the first all-electric SUV with a standard third row from a non-luxury brand. This feature, coupled with its slightly more reasonable price, makes the EV9 an attractive option for larger families looking to transition from gas-powered vehicles. Unlike the Tesla Model Y, which offers an optional third row for a higher price, Kia aims to provide a more accessible approach to extra seating. So, how usable is the EV9’s third row? Let’s delve into the details.

Space and Comfort in the Third Row

In terms of dimensions, the Kia EV9’s third row is quite promising. It offers 39.5 inches of headroom, 32.0 inches of legroom (max), and 41.9 inches of hip room. When compared to the Tesla Model Y, the EV9 clearly wins, providing more headroom, legroom, and hip room. Children are likely to find this space satisfactory. There are also convenient features such as two cupholders, a charge port on each side, and overhead lights for reading, making the EV9’s third row a comfortable spot for kids.

Installation of Car Seats and Booster Seats

For families with young children, installing car seats is a critical concern. In the EV9, a forward-facing convertible car seat can be installed without much trouble. However, the fixed head restraint might push the car seat off the seatback, making it challenging to achieve a flush fit. The same issue exists with high-back boosters. On the other hand, low-back boosters fit perfectly, and older children using them will likely find enough headroom and legroom to stay comfortable.

Suitability for Adults

Adults might find the third-row seating in the Kia EV9 slightly less accessible but still comfortable. While the step-in height is somewhat tall and the opening narrow, once seated, the space is adequate. My 5-foot-6-inch frame and my 6-foot husband both found the headroom and legroom acceptable, although positioning the feet could be a bit tricky. The second-row seats need to be adjusted forward to make ample legroom for third-row occupants, but this trade-off is manageable.

Final Thoughts

For families seeking an electric three-row SUV, the Kia EV9 stands out as a viable option. Its third row provides ample space, reasonable comfort, and practical amenities, making it suitable for day-to-day family use. While there are some challenges with car seat installations and access, the overall usability of the third row is commendable. In an emerging market with limited choices, the Kia EV9’s third row is ready for the spotlight.
