The Reliability Rankings Unveiled

Consumer Reports (CR) has unveiled the results of its annual auto reliability survey, and for the first time in history, Subaru has claimed the prestigious title of most dependable brand. This ranking is based on a comprehensive analysis that combines extensive road tests with reliability and owner satisfaction data gathered from over 300,000 vehicles.

Subaru Dethrones Established Champions

In a surprising turn of events, Subaru has dethroned longtime leaders Lexus and Toyota, who have shared the top honors since 2021. The new rankings place Lexus and Toyota in second and third place, respectively, for 2024. This shift is notable considering the significant data collected from Subaru’s vehicle lineup, covering models from 2000 to 2025.

Insight into Survey Methodology

The reliability score from CR ranges from 1 to 100 and is derived from survey questions that explored 20 potential trouble areas, from minor interior issues to major mechanical failures. Respondents reported on the reliability of their vehicles, providing a clear picture of ownership experiences. Subaru also topped CR’s overall brand rankings for 2025, which factor in owner satisfaction, maintenance costs, and safety data.

While Subaru’s close association with Toyota, especially regarding collaborative projects like the BRZ and Solterra, is tempting to consider as a contributing factor to its rise, it is worth noting that the Solterra was Subaru’s lowest-ranking model in terms of reliability. Other Asian brands, including Honda and Kia, also performed well, filling up the ranks with commendable scores.
