Kia’s Announcement on Tesla Supercharger Access

Kia recently announced its plan to provide access to Tesla’s extensive supercharger network for its electric vehicles, the EV6 and EV9. Initially set for a rollout on January 15, the rollout has now been delayed. According to a press release from Kia, the new timeline suggests that customers can expect access to the DC fast chargers in the first quarter of 2025.

Reasons Behind the Delay

While Kia has not specified the exact reasons for the postponement, James Bell, Kia’s head of corporate communications, confirmed the delay, emphasizing the company’s commitment to ensuring an exceptional ownership experience for EV customers. Bell stated, “We are committed to an exceptional ownership experience, and expansion of the network of available DC fast chargers for our EV customers is an important component of Kia’s growing leadership in electrified mobility.”

Future Plans for Kia EV Owners

Kia’s original strategy involved equipping their vehicles with Tesla charging ports, allowing users to manage charging through the Kia Access app. This solution would eliminate the cumbersome process of using third-party adapters or searching for Tesla superchargers with compatible connectors. As part of the plan, Kia intends to provide free adapters to EV9 and EV6 owners receiving their vehicles after September 4, 2024. These adapters will grant access to over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers.

Despite the setback for Kia, it is noteworthy that its parent company, Hyundai, and its luxury brand Genesis remain on track with their respective supercharger access plans. As competition in the EV market heats up, the urgency for automakers like Kia to adapt and innovate increases.
