Introduction

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla is set to captivate a broader audience with its latest updates, most notably the inclusion of an available eight-speed automatic transmission. When the GR Corolla was first introduced in 2023, it quickly became a favorite among hot-hatch enthusiasts, largely due to its six-speed manual transmission that appealed to purist drivers. However, this limited its market appeal. Now, Toyota aims to expand its reach by offering more versatile options.

Advanced Direct Automatic Transmission

Toyota refers to the new eight-speed automatic transmission as a Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT). Unlike the automatic transmissions in other Toyota sports cars that rely on deceleration g-forces and speed to determine shifting, the DAT in the GR Corolla responds to the driver’s pedal force. This innovative technology promises to improve response time, enhancing the overall driving experience, especially for those who prefer automatic transmissions.

Performance and Mechanical Upgrades

For 2025, the GR Corolla isn’t just getting a new transmission; there are several mechanical upgrades as well. The turbocharged three-cylinder engine now produces an additional 22 pounds-feet of torque, raising it to a total of 295, while horsepower remains unchanged at 300. Other performance enhancements include standard front and rear limited-slip differentials, new rebound springs, and altered rear suspension geometry which aims to improve stability and handling during aggressive driving.

Premium Plus Trim Level

The top-tier trim, previously known as the Circuit Edition, will now be called Premium Plus. It retains many of the features that made the Circuit Edition popular, such as the forged carbon-fiber roof, a distinctive hood with a prominent bulge and functional air vents, and black 18-inch wheels. Additionally, for models equipped with the automatic transmission, a supplementary transmission radiator is included. Interior accents also get updated, with the stitching color shifting from last year’s blue to a sleek red.

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla is scheduled to go on sale this winter, with pricing details expected to be announced closer to its launch date. With these new additions, Toyota aims to make the GR Corolla more appealing and accessible to a wider range of drivers, ensuring this hot-hatch continues to turn heads and win hearts on the road.
