Overview of the Recall
Ford is in the headlines once again as it recalls the Bronco Sport and Escape models due to a potential fuel leak issue. This recall affects vehicles produced from 2021 to 2023 for the Bronco Sport and 2020 to 2022 for the Escape, specifically those equipped with the turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. The total number of units involved stands at 33,576, which emphasizes the significance of this recall.
Background of the Fuel Leak Problem
The fuel leak issue was previously addressed in an earlier recall; however, Ford has indicated that the repairs were not executed properly. This has raised concerns for vehicle owners, as the defect involves the possibility of a cracked fuel injector that could lead to fuel or fuel vapor leaking. Such an occurrence poses the risk of igniting a fire if the fuel interacts with a hot surface.
Next Steps for Owners
To rectify this situation, Ford is urging owners of the affected models to return to their local dealerships for a necessary software update to the vehicles’ powertrain control module. The original recall tool failed to upload the required software correctly, necessitating another visit. Importantly, all repair services will be provided free of charge. Ford aims to notify dealers by April 24, with direct communications to affected owners to follow by May 1.
