Introduction to ZF’s Vision

In the landscape of electric vehicles, ZF, a prominent German supplier, is making significant strides. Known for their advanced six- and eight-speed automatic transmissions, ZF is now refocusing its expertise on upgrading traditional generators found in extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). This innovation aims to reshape the operational dynamics of powertrains in future vehicles.

Understanding the EREV Design

An EREV shares characteristics with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), typically comprising a gas engine, high-voltage battery, and electric motor. However, the key distinction lies in the gas engine’s function: rather than driving the wheels, it solely powers an electric generator that recharges the battery, enhancing range. ZF’s latest concept, the Electric Range Extender Plus (ERE), takes this a step further by allowing the generator system to also drive the wheels, introducing an exciting layer of functionality.

Features and Future of the Electric Range Extender Plus

The ERE represents a novel line of range extenders compatible with both 400-volt and 800-volt systems, incorporating an inverter, a planetary gearset, and sophisticated software. Notably, it features a built-in clutch and differential, enabling it to function as either a current generator or a secondary drive. This integration offers manufacturers a compact solution that amalgamates power generation and propulsion, simplifying design and potentially reducing costs. Scheduled for production next year, the ERE can deliver between 70 and 150 kilowatts (94 to 201 horsepower), facilitating enhanced performance without tethering the gas engine to wheel movement.

Dr. Otmar Scharrer, ZF’s Senior Vice President, emphasizes the untapped potential of range extenders, asserting their growing demand, particularly in platforms engineered for battery-electric drivetrains. With this innovation, ZF is poised to significantly impact the future of electric vehicle technology.
