Kia’s Latest Recall Announcement

Kia has announced a significant recall affecting more than 137,200 of its Seltos and Soul compact SUVs. This notice is prompted by concerns surrounding engine damage, which could potentially result in serious issues such as engine stalls or even fire risks. The affected models are from the 2021 to 2023 model years.

Engine Damage Explained

The root cause of this issue lies in improperly manufactured piston oil rings. These defective components can lead to engine damage over time. The primary risks associated with these problems include an unexpected engine stall while driving, significantly increasing the potential for accidents, or in worst-case scenarios, a fire taking place in the engine compartment.

Remediation Process for Affected Owners

For those who own the affected vehicles, Kia will take measures to resolve the issue at no cost. Dealerships are expected to inspect the vehicles and will replace the engine if necessary. Additionally, a piston-ring noise-sensing system will be installed to further mitigate risks. Kia plans to notify affected owners starting April 4. Those with questions about the recall are encouraged to reach out to Kia directly at 800-333-4542 (reference recall number SC336) or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 888-327-4236. Vehicle owners may also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website for personalized information.
