A Rollercoaster Journey
The world of Formula 1 is no stranger to ups and downs, and McLaren’s journey is a prime example. After more than two decades, the Woking-based outfit has regained its place at the top of the constructors’ championship in 2024, outpacing rivals Red Bull and Ferrari. It’s been an exhilarating ride, to say the least!
A Reunion Gone Awry
Back in 2013, McLaren made the bold choice to rejoin forces with Honda, dreaming of reigniting their golden era from the late ’80s and early ’90s. However, the reality of the new turbo-hybrid era hit hard. What was meant to be a triumphant return soon became a nightmare characterized by retirements and grid penalties. From 2015 to 2017, the team faced severe struggles, finishing ninth, sixth, and ninth in the constructors’ standings.
Turning the Tide
After three frustrating seasons, McLaren and Honda went their separate ways in 2018, leading to a switch to Renault engines. Almost immediately, fortunes began to shift as McLaren secured points in the opening races of the 2018 season. Under the guidance of new leadership, including CEO Zak Brown, the team crafted a fresh strategy aimed at reclaiming their former glory. By 2019, McLaren was proudly asserting itself as ‘the best of the rest’ behind the dominant trio of Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull.
Today, McLaren stands tall, having overcome years of adversity. Their story is a testament to resilience and determination, reminding fans why they fell in love with F1 in the first place!
