Renault’s Retro Revolution
Renault is embracing its rich history with a slew of retro-inspired projects, including delicate restomods like the Renault 5 Diamant and the spirited R5 Turbo 3E. Alongside these creations, the French automaker has been busy reviving production models like the new electric Renault 5 E-Tech. Looking ahead, roadgoing versions of the 4Ever Trophy concept and Twingo Legend are set to grace Europe’s streets in the coming years. Now, Renault has taken another leap by bringing the R17 into the modern era with an electric restomod in collaboration with French designer Ora ïto.
The R17’s Electrifying Transformation
The Renault 17 was a fastback coupe from the 1970s, known for its longitudinally mounted four-cylinder engines driving the front wheels. During its production run from 1971 to 1979, more than 92,000 units were sold. The electric R17 restomod, however, transforms this classic with a cutting-edge 270-hp rear-mounted electric powertrain. This one-off car sports a sharp new face, featuring thin rectangular headlights that modernize the original’s circular units for a more stern look.
Modern Design Meets Classic Appeal
The redesigned grille trim includes two wide rectangular elements with intricate hash marks, and the side window louvers are smoothly integrated into the body. At the rear, a single LED strip serves as the taillight, stretching across the entire fascia. The wheels, reminiscent of vinyl records, sit beneath squared-off arches. Renault has also extended the R17 EV’s body by 6.7 inches and incorporated a new carbon-fiber chassis. Despite these changes, the car retains original doors, windows, and underbody structure, weighing in at approximately 3,086 pounds.
A Cabin with Old-School Charm
Inside, the cabin is a blend of nostalgia and modernity. The circular steering wheel has been replaced with a squarish unit featuring a single rectangular spoke. Behind the steering wheel, four small screens echo the original R17’s gauges, while a low-mounted center screen updates the dashboard. The seats have been restyled, upholstered in a mix of brown merino wool and beige wool bouclé fabric, adding a touch of luxurious comfort.
While the electric R17 concept isn’t slated for production, it demonstrates Renault’s willingness to revisit its storied past with a forward-looking approach. This eye-catching restomod is a testament to the brand’s innovative spirit and commitment to crafting unique, retro-themed projects.
