Safety Recall: 93,500 Mazda MX-5 Miatas and Fiat 124 Spiders

Overview of the Recall

The automotive industry has announced significant safety recalls affecting approximately 93,500 vehicles, specifically the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Fiat 124 Spider models. The respective parent companies, Mazda and Stellantis, are addressing critical issues related to airbag deployment for model years 2016-2023 and 2017-2020. These recalls highlight the importance of vehicle safety features in protecting occupants during a crash.

Details of the Airbag Issue

The core issue prompting this recall is a software error in the airbag control module. This defect may cause front airbags to deploy with excessive force, potentially increasing the risk of injury to drivers and passengers. Mazda has identified around 77,700 affected MX-5 Miata models, while Fiat’s recall encompasses 15,800 124 Spider vehicles. Such recalls underscore the need for thorough safety protocols in vehicle manufacturing.

Resolution and Owner Notifications

To rectify the described problem, both manufacturers are committed to providing necessary updates at no cost to vehicle owners. This includes updating the airbag control module software to ensure proper airbag functionality. Mazda’s notification process will begin on November 17, while Fiat has scheduled notifications starting on November 7. Owners seeking additional details regarding their vehicles can contact Stellantis at 800-853-1403 or Mazda at 800-222-5500. Additionally, owners are encouraged to check their vehicle identification numbers on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
