Introduction to the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid
Subaru closed out 2024 with impressive sales growth, marking its 29th consecutive month of increasing sales. The automaker is setting its sights on maintaining this momentum through its second-best-selling model, the Forester. Completely redesigned for the 2025 model year, the Forester draws closer to the compact SUV design while moving away from its previous wagon-like appearance.
Hybrid Powertrain Performance
For 2026, Subaru introduces its first-ever hybrid powertrain for the Forester, shared with the recently unveiled 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid. This innovative gas-electric system features a reworked 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine coupled with two electric motors. One motor is dedicated to recharging the 1.1-kilowatt-hour battery, while the other propels the vehicle forward. The new hybrid variant boasts a powerful combined output of 194 horsepower, surpassing the previous non-hybrid model by 14 hp.
Enhanced Fuel Efficiency
The 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid promises significant advancements in fuel efficiency, with expectations of up to 40% improved economy in urban driving and a 25% enhancement overall. The current all-wheel-drive (AWD) Forester receives an EPA rating of 26/33/29 mpg. Anticipating the hybrid’s launch, we expect city mileage ratings in the mid-30s and a combined figure nearing 40 mpg when official figures are published. Positioned to compete effectively with hybrids from Toyota and Honda, the Subaru Forester aims to redefine its presence in the competitive compact SUV segment.
