An Upmarket Move with New Trims
The 2025 Mazda CX-90 marks a significant step upmarket for the independent Japanese brand. Built on a new rear-drive architecture, the CX-90 emulates the driving dynamics of German luxury brands. However, all CX-90 units sold in the U.S. will come with all-wheel drive (AWD). For the 2025 model year, Mazda has diversified the CX-90 lineup by adding new premium sport trim levels. These are available with both the base turbo powertrain and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option.
Powertrain Specs and Fuel Efficiency
The Mazda CX-90 is powered by a newly developed turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine, available in two states of tune. The standard turbo variant generates 280 horsepower and 332 pounds-feet of torque and is projected to maintain an EPA rating of 24/28/25 mpg (city/highway/combined). The turbo S version offers 340 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet on premium fuel, with a slightly lower mpg rating of 23/28/25. The PHEV variant features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, complemented by an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 323 horsepower. It can travel up to 26 miles on electric power alone and has a combined fuel efficiency rating of 25 mpg.
Features and Safety
The new premium sport trims for 2025 include several stylistic and functional upgrades, such as black 21-inch wheels and black finishes on the grille, badging, lower front and rear bumpers, side mirrors, door trim, and roof rails. The PHEV trims, in particular, come with a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, front and rear parking sensors are now standard. Safety features across all trims include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Pricing and Availability
The 2025 Mazda CX-90 will be available for purchase later this summer. Pricing starts at $39,300 for the turbo select trim and goes up to $59,405 for the PHEV premium plus trim. Each trim level offers a unique combination of performance, luxury, and safety features, ensuring a suitable option for various preferences and needs.
