Introduction to the New Hyundai Nexo

The all-new Hyundai Nexo marks a bold step forward for the automaker in the hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) segment. Despite worldwide challenges in the sales of hydrogen-powered cars, Hyundai’s commitment shines brightly through this latest model.

A Familiar Yet Distinct Design

At first glance, the new Nexo may remind some of the Initium concept revealed last year, but it stands out with its unique aesthetics. The modern design, featuring Hyundai’s signature pixelated headlights and a distinct stance, diverges from conventional egg-shaped crossovers, offering a refreshing alternative on the roads.

The Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Challenge

Despite its alluring design and promising technology, the new Nexo faces a significant hurdle: the hydrogen fueling infrastructure. Although the FCEV has impressive specifications, including a hydrogen fuel stack delivering a maximum power of 110 kilowatts, the refueling facilities remain sparse, particularly in California, which is a primary market. With fueling options limited and often costly, the transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles like the Nexo will take time.

The new Hyundai Nexo, equipped with an upgraded electric motor delivering up to 150 kW (201 horsepower), aims to improve upon its predecessor’s performance. As we eagerly await its market reception, only time will tell if this second-generation FCEV can navigate the challenges that have hampered earlier models.
