The Electric Bloom: Lotus Evija Takes Center Stage

The Long-Awaited Production of the Lotus Evija

After a prolonged wait filled with setbacks, the Lotus Evija, the flagship electric hypercar, finally began its production in 2024. The anticipation surrounding this $2.3 million quad-motor marvel was palpable, but reports suggest that actual customer deliveries remain sparse. It’s quite the conundrum for the automotive world, eagerly awaiting a taste of this lightning fast beauty.

Engineering Excellence with a Twist

Lotus asserts that the Evija maintains the brand’s celebrated ethos of “adding lightness.” Officially, it weighs in at 4,160 pounds (1,887 kg), considerably lighter than its counterpart, the Emeya electric sedan. Central to its relatively light footprint is a compact 70 kilowatt-hour battery, which, although offering a modest 195 miles (313 km) of range, promises exhilarating performance at the cost of range when pushed.

Driving Experience: Performance Meets Precision

The real magic happens behind the wheel. While Top Gear’s Jethro Bovingdon uncovered the car’s tendency to understeer — not exactly breaking news for a Lotus — the Evija surprises by employing torque vectoring for improved handling. Its mastery over grip and traction delivers a driving experience that feels anything but electric. However, some might find the limitations in powertrain tuning compared to competitors like the Rimac Nevera a bit lacking. Nonetheless, the Evija embodies the fearless spirit of Lotus as it carves its path in the electric realm.
