The End of the Mitsubishi Mirage

Today marks a significant shift in the automotive landscape as the news of the Mitsubishi Mirage’s discontinuation has been confirmed. Jeremy Barnes, Mitsubishi’s North American spokesman, announced that the Mirage and its G4 sedan variant will not have a 2025 model. Production will cease by the end of this year, and the dealer stock is anticipated to last into the summer of 2025.

Reasons Behind the Discontinuation

The demise of the Mirage has been looming for some time. Last year, reports indicated that the subcompact car was on the verge of being phased out due to declining sales. Despite its affordability, the Mirage was losing favor among consumers. Starting at $18,015 for the hatchback and $19,115 for the sedan, it was one of the most economical new cars available in the U.S. market. However, its 78-horsepower three-cylinder engine failed to meet the expectations of many modern-day drivers.

The Future of Affordable Cars

With the departure of the Mitsubishi Mirage, the segment of new cars priced below ,000 is becoming increasingly rare. The Nissan Versa, with a base price of $17,820, is now the sole survivor in this affordable bracket. The extinction of budget-friendly new cars underscores a pivotal moment in the automotive industry, reflecting changing consumer preferences and economic realities.

Concluding Thoughts

While the Mitsubishi Mirage may not have been the most powerful contender in the market, its affordability made it a viable option for many budget-conscious buyers. Its discontinuation marks the end of an era where sub-$20k new cars were more accessible. As the industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how manufacturers will address the demand for economical yet efficient vehicles in the future.
