Introduction

The recent implementation of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) requirement has significantly affected the number of cars entering Johor from Singapore. Reports indicate a notable drop of about 20% in entries since its enforcement began on October 1.

Initial Observations

A home ministry official at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (BSI) reported the decrease in activity early on the first day of the new regulation. However, it remains premature to attribute this decline solely to the VEP, as other variables may influence cross-border traffic.

Phased Implementation and Compliance Measures

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has reassured Singaporean motorists that they could still enter Johor during the initial phase without the VEP.JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli emphasized that while enforcement of the VEP will proceed, it will occur gradually. Private vehicle owners entering Malaysia from Singapore must register, install, and activate their VEP tags at designated installation centers if they have not already done so.

As a precaution, warnings will be issued at entry points for those who have not obtained the VEP before leaving Malaysia. As of September 25, over 62,635 vehicles from Singapore had activated their VEP tags, indicating a proactive response to the new requirements. This number shows that while the vehicle entry permit represents a major regulatory change, many are already adapting.

In conclusion, the introduction of the Vehicle Entry Permit is poised to reshape cross-border vehicle movements and compliance practices within Johor. Motorists are encouraged to remain informed about these changes to ensure a smooth travel experience.
