Importance of Proper Steering Wheel Grip

Holding the steering wheel correctly is a fundamental aspect of safe driving. It not only enables you to control the vehicle efficiently but also significantly reduces the risk of accidents. Adopting the right grip on the steering wheel enhances your comfort as well as your ability to maneuver the car effectively. In this post, we will discuss three essential methods of holding the steering wheel that every driver should follow.

1. Adjust Your Driving Position

Before driving, make sure to adjust your seat, headrest, and mirrors to fit your height. Equally important is adjusting the steering wheel. Most vehicle models allow drivers to adjust the tilt and reach of the steering wheel using a lever located underneath the steering column. This means you should be able to view both side mirrors and the rearview mirror comfortably, ensuring maximum visibility and a more enjoyable driving experience.

2. The Nine and Three Steering Method

The nine and three method is a recommended technique for holding the steering wheel effectively. Place your left hand where the number 9 would be on a clock and your right hand at the number 3 position. This grip is designed to be safer than the traditional 10 and 2 positions, particularly for vehicles with smaller steering wheels. Many drivers have reported improved handling and comfort with this method, allowing for better steering control during their drive.

3. Utilize the Push and Pull Technique

While driving, it’s crucial to maintain both hands on the steering wheel at all times. The push and pull technique reinforces this idea by allowing you to navigate turns with greater precision. For instance, when turning right, push the wheel clockwise with your left hand while simultaneously pulling it clockwise with your right hand. This method ensures that both hands remain engaged, promoting safer driving practices and improving control over the vehicle.
