Introduction to Stellantis’ New Patent

Stellantis has recently been granted a patent for an advanced technology that is poised to become a hallmark in future Jeep electric vehicles (EVs). This patent, which covers an integrated winch system, was first reported by Mopar Insiders and reflects Stellantis’ commitment to enhancing the off-road capabilities of its electric lineup.

Details of the Integrated Winch System

The patent, filed on January 25, 2024, and granted on January 21, 2025, outlines a winch system designed to be built directly into future electric vehicles. Traditional winches are often added post-production as bumper-mounted systems, yet this innovative design sources its power directly from the high-voltage battery and electric drive motors found within EVs. Notably, the patent opens the possibility for either front or rear winch installations, enhancing versatility on rugged terrains.

Advantages of the Integrated Design

One of the key advantages of the patent’s design is the elimination of a separate winch motor. Instead of relying on a traditional electric winch setup, the integrated system redirects torque from the front or rear axles through a planetary gear set to drive the winch spool. While the exact location of the onboard winch isn’t specified, the technology is indicative of a shift towards more efficient and compact solutions. This may appeal to those who prefer a sleeker vehicle aesthetic over the rugged look of mounted winches.

Although it seems unlikely this technology will debut with the upcoming Jeep Recon EV, it certainly sets an exciting precedent for future models, especially in their subsequent facelifts.
