What is the Check-Engine Light?

The check-engine light, often referred to as the “service engine soon” light, is a warning indicator that signals an issue detected by your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system. This light can appear as a yellow or orange engine outline, which activates briefly after turning on the ignition, along with other warning lights, to indicate the system is functioning correctly.

Common Causes of the Check-Engine Light

The occurrence of the check-engine light usually signifies a concern with the vehicle’s emissions system. However, it may also indicate potential mechanical issues within the engine or problems with the transmission. A steady light does not typically indicate a serious problem but does require timely investigation. On the other hand, a flashing light signals immediate attention is required, as it often represents a more significant underlying issue.

Diagnosing the Problem

Since 1996, vehicles are equipped with an onboard diagnostics system (OBD2) that stores trouble codes when faults are detected. These codes help identify the source of the problem. While inexpensive code readers are available for personal use, many auto parts stores offer free code readings. DIY enthusiasts can address minor issues like a loose gas cap, which can trigger the check-engine light. However, for complex diagnostics, more advanced scan tools may be needed, typically utilized by professional repair shops.
