Introduction

Volkswagen has long been synonymous with fun-to-drive vehicles, and their foray into the electric realm is no exception. The carmaker is not only preparing hot variants of the upcoming ID.2 and next-gen electric Golf but is also poised to expand its electric GTI lineup beyond what we currently envision.

Plans for Electric GTI Models

CEO Thomas Schäfer recently revealed to Autocar that Volkswagen is developing a “whole group of GTI” models that are expected to be nothing short of extraordinary. Schäfer, after driving a prototype GTI electric vehicle, characterized it as “a monster car,” echoing sentiments from other executives who likened it to a “real go-kart.” Interesting news, however, arises with expectations that these electric GTI models will maintain a power range of under 300 hp, possibly around 250 hp. This might seem modest, yet previous experiences with lighter electric vehicles, such as the first-generation electric Mini Cooper, show just how exhilarating a well-balanced car can be.

The Future of Volkswagen’s Electric Lineup

One of the most compelling aspects of Volkswagen’s strategy is their plan to introduce more than two GTI-branded electric vehicles. Although the GTI nameplate has traditionally graced hatchbacks, there is speculation regarding its potential application to other body styles. While all GTI models have historically been front-wheel-drive, it remains to be seen if VW might also explore rear-wheel-drive options in the future.

As VW gears up for the production debut of the ID.2 concept, which will not feature the “ID” designation, anticipation builds for the possible revelation of a GTI variant. The timing is fortuitous, aligning with the 2026 50th anniversary of the original Golf GTI’s launch. Following closely, the electric Golf is expected to emerge around 2029, poised to redefine the brand’s electric vehicle identity.
