Introduction to Electrify America

Electrify America, one of the largest DC fast charging networks in the United States, is making significant strides in improving accessibility for electric vehicle (EV) owners. Recently, they have begun rolling out stations that facilitate simultaneous charging of both Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles without the need for adapters.

The New Dual Charging Stations

The Volkswagen Group-owned operator currently operates two pilot sites in the States: one in Orlando, Florida, and the other in Waterford, Connecticut. Each site features three stalls capable of charging two cars at the same time. These stations are equipped with Combined Charging System 1 (CCS1) and North American Charging Standard (NACS) cables, providing flexibility to drivers.

Benefits for EV Owners

As competition among charging networks increases, the introduction of the electrify America app enhances the user experience. Drivers can easily initiate charging sessions and process payments via contactless systems on-site. The new setup benefits various EV models, including the Rivian R1T and Chevrolet Equinox EV, as they come with CCS1 inlets. However, it’s important to note that more automakers are leaning towards the NACS, especially after Tesla opened its Supercharger network to other brands.

While the Tesla Supercharger network is well-regarded for its vast presence, most stalls typically output 250 kW. This is adequate for the majority of EVs; however, as newer, faster-charging vehicles enter the market, the demand for higher power options is evident. Electrify America’s 400 kW stalls cater to this need, allowing for quicker charging experiences.

As the EV landscape evolves, integrating NACS ports into various charging stations will reduce the need for adapters, paving the way for a more accessible and user-friendly charging environment for all electric vehicles.
