BYD has officially revealed the first images of the new BYD Seal 07 EV, a fully electric midsize sedan roughly the size of a Toyota Camry — and on paper, it looks like one of the brand’s most compelling launches yet.

The Seal 07 EV is the all-electric sibling to the Seal 07 DM-i plug-in hybrid introduced last year. Visually, it follows BYD’s Ocean X design language with a sleek, low-slung bonnet, a closed grille typical of EVs, and sharp LED lighting signatures. The proportions are balanced and aerodynamic, measuring 4,995 mm long with a 2,900 mm wheelbase — placing it squarely in the heart of the global midsize sedan segment.

Under the skin, the Seal 07 EV is powered by a rear-mounted 240 kW (322 hp) electric motor paired with a 69.07 kWh battery. BYD claims a CLTC range of 705 km (438 miles), along with an impressive energy consumption figure of just 10.9 kWh per 100 km. Even accounting for the typically optimistic CLTC cycle, those numbers suggest competitive real-world efficiency. For comparison, rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 offer strong range figures, but BYD’s efficiency claim positions the Seal 07 EV as a serious contender in cost-per-kilometer terms.

Technology is another headline feature. A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor signals the likely debut of BYD’s upgraded “God’s Eye” 5.0 advanced driver-assistance system. If confirmed, it would mark a significant step forward in intelligent driving capabilities, bringing the Seal 07 EV closer to premium competitors that emphasize semi-autonomous features as a selling point.

Inside, the cabin follows BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetics” theme. A 15.6-inch floating infotainment display dominates the dashboard, complemented by a dedicated digital driver cluster, wireless charging pads, a rotary controller, and a minimalist two-spoke steering wheel. The design aims to balance modern tech appeal with everyday usability — an area where many traditional midsize sedans still lag behind EV-focused brands.

Strategically, the Seal 07 EV is important. The Seal 07 DM-i starts at 149,800 yuan (around $21,900), and if the EV version launches near that price, it could significantly undercut comparable electric sedans in China. This pricing pressure would not only impact domestic competitors but could ripple across export markets where BYD is expanding aggressively.

Compared to combustion rivals like the Camry, the Seal 07 EV offers instant torque, advanced connectivity, and significantly lower operating costs. Against EV competitors, it competes on range, technology, and potentially aggressive pricing. That combination could make it particularly attractive to buyers transitioning from gasoline to electric for the first time.

In my view, the Seal 07 EV reflects BYD’s evolving strategy: scale production, integrate advanced tech quickly, and price vehicles to disrupt established segments. If real-world range and pricing meet expectations, the Seal 07 EV could become a benchmark in the midsize electric sedan class — not just in China, but in global markets where value-driven EVs are gaining traction.
