Introduction to BMW’s Recent Recall

The recent months have been challenging for BMW concerning vehicle recalls, with the company continuing to address safety concerns into August. Following the substantial recalls in July, BMW is now recalling over 105,000 vehicles due to a potential fire risk associated with the engine starter motor.

Details of the Affected Vehicles

The recall impacts several models from the 2019-2021 production years. Specifically, the affected vehicles include model-year 2019-2020 X5 and X7 SUVs, model-year 2020 3 Series sedans, and model-year 2020-21 7 Series sedans. Additionally, the 2020 models of the 8 Series convertibles, coupes, and gran coupes are also included.

Nature of the Issue

The identified issue lies with the engine starter motor. Certain vehicles may have mechanical damage that could prevent the engine from starting. Repeated attempts to start the engine under these conditions may result in an electrical overload of the starter. This malfunction poses a risk of overheating, ultimately leading to a potential fire hazard.

Steps for Owners and Resolution

BMW has committed to mitigating the risk by updating the vehicle software for free. The company will begin notifying affected owners starting September 23. In the meantime, vehicle owners are advised to contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417, NHTSA’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit the automaker’s website to check their vehicle identification number (VIN) for more information.

Previous BMW Recalls

These recent recalls follow on the heels of other significant safety recalls in July. The automaker previously recalled over 291,000 X3 SUVs due to cargo rail issues, and nearly 400,000 3 Series vehicles were subjected to a follow-up recall related to the Takata airbag crisis.
