Introduction to the Recall

Hyundai has officially announced a recall affecting nearly every Nexo model sold since its debut in the United States. With a total number of 1,545 Hyundai Nexos involved, this recall stems from a potentially dangerous defect concerning the vehicle’s hydrogen gas emissions. In the world of automobiles, especially those embracing cutting-edge technology such as the hydrogen fuel-cell SUV, safety is paramount. The recall has raised significant concerns among Nexo owners.

Understanding the Safety Issue

The crux of the issue pertains to the thermally-activated pressure relief device (TPRD) essential for safely managing hydrogen gas in the Nexo. This device is engineered to vent hydrogen gas if the fuel tanks overheat, preventing over-pressurization. Unfortunately, NHTSA documents indicate that micro-cracks in the glass bulb of the TPRD can lead to premature failure, causing hydrogen gas to release during normal operations, potentially resulting in a hazardous situation especially if an ignition source is nearby.

What Owners Need to Do

Hyundai has taken steps to resolve this issue by replacing the glass bulb with a more robust metal TPRD in affected vehicles. Owners are advised to park their vehicles away from buildings and other flammable structures until the replacement has been installed. Hyundai will reach out to all impacted owners by December 10 regarding the recall, and the repair will be provided at no cost. To confirm if your vehicle is affected, visit the NHTSA recalls website for updates.
