Overview of the Recall

Hyundai has announced a recall affecting specific models of the 2025 Tucson and Santa Cruz. Approximately 42,465 vehicles are included in this recall, with around 35,000 Tucson models and 6,900 Santa Cruz vehicles impacted. The recall is a response to an issue that may increase the likelihood of the vehicles rolling away.

Cause of the Issue

The recall is attributed to an improperly routed wiring harness in the console of affected vehicles. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this faulty harness could come into contact with the mechanical release for the shift-lever lock. This potential contact could allow the vehicles to shift from park without the necessity of pressing the brake pedal, significantly heightening the risk of unintentional movement.

Steps for Affected Owners

While Hyundai has not issued a stop-drive warning, it is strongly recommending that owners of the affected Tucson and Santa Cruz models continue to utilize their parking brakes, ensuring the vehicle is securely positioned when parked. Hyundai will initiate contact with vehicle owners and advise them to bring their cars to an authorized dealer for the necessary repairs, which involve rerouting the console extension harness away from the release mechanism. This repair will be conducted free of charge, and owners who previously incurred repair costs will be reimbursed. Notifications to dealers and owners will be sent before January 19, 2025.
