What is a Kei Car?
For those unfamiliar, kei cars, often referred to as k-cars, are a beloved category of vehicles in Japan. They are the smallest street-legal passenger cars, measuring less than 3.4 m (134 inches) long, 1.48 m (58 inches) wide, and 2 m (79 inches) tall. With this classification, the new BYD EV fits right in as it stretches just 3,780 mm long (148.8 inches), making it perfectly suited for urban environments.

What to Expect from BYD’s New Model
Recent spy photos have given us a sneak peek into this tiny electric marvel. The quirky, upright design mirrors the charm of other popular kei cars like the Honda N-Box. Additionally, the interior showcases a large floating infotainment screen, keeping in line with BYD’s tech-savvy reputation.
Under the hood, the kei car will feature a 20 kWh battery, promising a WLTP range of 180 km (112 miles) and supporting DC charging speeds of up to 100 kW. This model certainly marks an exciting leap in the kei car landscape!
As competition rises, it will be interesting to see how BYD’s smallest EV will carve its niche in Japan, where domestic brands have traditionally held the reins.
