Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-Tron Recall: Addressing Rollaway Risks

Overview of the Recall

The Volkswagen ID.4 and its counterpart, the Audi Q4 e-Tron, are facing a significant recall affecting approximately 60,000 vehicles. This recall is due to a potential rollaway risk, where certain models may not properly indicate that the transmission is in neutral. This situation could lead to unexpected movement, posing a safety hazard for drivers and other road users.

Details on Affected Models

The recall encompasses ID.4s from the 2021 to 2023 model years along with the Audi Q4 e-Tron models, including some sportback variants from 2022 to 2023. According to reports filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on February 26, 2025, the core of the issue lies in the gauge cluster not reflecting when the transmission is set in the ‘N’ position. If the electronic parking brake (EPB) is not engaged in this scenario, the affected vehicles could roll away, leading to potential accidents.

Resolution and Next Steps for Owners

Diagnosis of the problem has identified a faulty brake control unit, prompting Volkswagen to implement updated software solutions since October 2023. However, vehicles manufactured prior to this update remain at risk. VW recommends that owners of the affected ID.4 and Q4 e-Tron models bring their vehicles to local dealers for remediation. All repairs will be conducted free of charge to ensure safety compliance. Volkswagen has committed to informing its dealers of the recall by February 25 and will proactively notify all owners by April 25, 2025.
