The Road to Recovery for KTM

Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM has recently announced that production at its Mattighofen facility has resumed following a financial hiccup. After a 90-day pause initiated on November 29, 2024, the brand is back in the saddle, much to the delight of biking enthusiasts everywhere.

Challenges Faced

KTM’s temporary halt was a result of entering self-administration due to severe financial difficulties. During this time, the brand had to grapple with significant job losses and a blank slate for new bike production. The resumption of manufacturing is a ray of hope; however, KTM faces a daunting task ahead, with a €600 million repayment to creditors looming on May 23, 2025, along with additional continuation costs of €150 million.

What’s Next for KTM Motorcycles?

While production has stretched back into full gear, the details on which models are actively being produced remain under wraps. KTM has a rich lineup yet to make it to UK dealers, including the highly anticipated 1390 Super Duke GT and multiple versions of the 1390 Super Adventure, both powered by its formidable 1350cc V-twin engine. The market eagerly awaits these machines, alongside the streamlined 990 RCR sportsbike and the agile 990 Duke R naked bike.

Additionally, changes within KTM’s leadership bring another layer of uncertainty. Former CEO Stefan Pierer recently stepped down from the executive board, leaving Gottfried Neumeister at the helm. It’s time for KTM to stabilize and reestablish its commitment to quality and performance in motorcycle manufacturing.
