Overview of the Recall

General Motors (GM) has recently issued a recall affecting over 23,000 units of the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV. This move comes as the company identified a unique issue with the pedestrian alert sound system, which may not generate sufficient noise. While the nearly silent drive of electric vehicles is often appreciated, the Equinox might be just a tad too quiet.

The Problem at Hand

In a letter sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on September 30, GM revealed that the recall specifically targets Chevy Equinox EV models manufactured between August 8, 2023, and August 28, 2024. The faulty alert system could lead to situations where pedestrians are unaware of the approaching vehicle, particularly at lower speeds. As a result, these vehicles may not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 141, which pertains to minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Next Steps for Affected Owners

While GM has not reported any incidents connected to this issue, the recall has been issued as a precautionary measure. The company is currently working on a solution that involves updating the Body Control Module (BCM) instead of a full replacement. Affected Equinox EV owners are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates from GM as they develop the fix. This proactive approach ensures the safety of both drivers and pedestrians alike, keeping the streets safer for everyone.
