BYD is extending its ultra-fast “Flash Charging” technology beyond premium vehicles, bringing the system to more mainstream models including the Yuan Plus—sold internationally as the Atto 3.
The move marks the next phase of BYD’s rollout strategy. After debuting its new Blade Battery 2.0 and charging system in higher-end vehicles like the Yangwang U7 and the Denza Z9 GT, the company is now applying the same technology to one of its best-selling electric SUVs.
From Luxury Flagship to Mass Market
BYD’s Flash Charging system is designed to significantly reduce charging times. Under ideal conditions, vehicles equipped with the technology can recharge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes, and reach near full charge in roughly nine minutes.
In practical terms, that brings EV charging closer to the time it takes to refuel a gasoline vehicle—at least where compatible high-power chargers are available.
So far, this capability has been limited to premium models. Expanding it to the Yuan Plus suggests BYD is aiming to scale the technology across higher-volume segments.

Updated Atto 3 With New Battery Options
The updated Yuan Plus/Atto 3 will feature two new battery options—approximately 57.5 kWh and 68.5 kWh—offering CLTC-rated ranges of up to 540 km (335 miles) and 630 km (391 miles), respectively.
Alongside the battery upgrade, BYD is introducing more powerful rear-mounted electric motors, with outputs ranging from 268 hp to 322 hp.
The model also grows slightly in size, though it remains smaller than competitors like the Tesla Model Y, which continues to dominate the segment in many global markets.
A Response to Rising Competition
The Yuan Plus has been one of BYD’s strongest performers globally, ranking among the top-selling EVs in 2025. However, competition in China’s EV market has intensified, particularly in the affordable crossover segment.
By adding faster charging, longer range, and updated performance, BYD appears to be reinforcing the model’s appeal as newer, lower-cost rivals enter the market.
This strategy reflects a broader shift across the industry, where charging speed is becoming as important as range in influencing buyer decisions.
The Bigger Picture
BYD has already begun introducing Flash Charging technology in overseas markets, starting with premium models in Europe. Expanding it to mainstream vehicles could accelerate adoption—provided charging infrastructure keeps pace.
At the same time, the company continues to build out its own high-power charging network, particularly in China.
Takeaway
BYD’s decision to bring its ultra-fast charging technology to high-volume models like the Atto 3 signals a push to make faster charging more widely accessible. As competition grows, features like charging speed and convenience are becoming key differentiators in the global EV market.
