Hyundai has introduced two new electric vehicle concepts under its IONIQ brand—“Earth” and “Venus”—as part of a broader push to strengthen its position in China’s competitive EV market.

The concepts were revealed ahead of the Beijing Auto Show, which opens on April 24, following a teaser campaign that hinted at a new direction for Hyundai’s IONIQ lineup. The company described the unveiling as the start of a “new journey” for the brand, signaling a renewed focus on both design and in-car technology.

Two Concepts, Two Use Cases

The two models target distinct segments. Venus is positioned as a sleek, design-forward electric sedan, while Earth is framed as a practical family SUV.Venus features a streamlined silhouette and a gold-toned exterior Hyundai calls “Radiant Gold.” Its lighting design departs from the pixel-style signature seen on models like the IONIQ 5, instead adopting slimmer LED elements that give it a more conventional, coupe-like appearance. The overall look aligns with broader trends in EV sedan design, where aerodynamics and minimalism are increasingly emphasized.

Earth, by contrast, takes a more robust approach. The SUV concept features sharper lines and a more upright stance, aimed at everyday usability. Inside, Hyundai highlights “air-hug” seating made from soft modular materials, suggesting a focus on comfort and cabin innovation.

A Software-First Approach

Beyond design, Hyundai is signaling a shift toward software-defined vehicles. The company said its IONIQ brand in China will evolve into a broader mobility ecosystem, rather than remaining just a lineup of EV models.

Central to this strategy is Hyundai’s new software platform, developed under Hyundai Motor Group. The system integrates the vehicle’s operating system, infotainment, and hardware into a unified architecture. Its Android-based interface is designed to function similarly to a smartphone, reflecting a growing industry trend also seen in competitors like Tesla.

This approach aims to meet increasing demand in China for connected, customizable in-car experiences.

China-Focused Strategy

The Earth and Venus concepts are part of Hyundai’s broader effort to regain momentum in China, where competition from domestic EV makers has intensified in recent years.

The company is also introducing a new naming strategy for IONIQ models in the region, with future vehicles named after planets. The idea, Hyundai says, is to position each model as orbiting around the driver—an attempt to reinforce a more personalized, user-centric brand identity.

More details, including potential production timelines, are expected during Hyundai’s presentation at the Beijing Auto Show. The company is also preparing to showcase the IONIQ 3 at Milan Design Week later in April.

Takeaway

Hyundai’s Earth and Venus concepts highlight its evolving EV strategy in China, combining distinct vehicle types with a stronger focus on software and user experience. The concepts offer an early look at how the IONIQ brand may adapt to local market demands as competition in the region continues to intensify.
