BYD is pushing further into the ultra-luxury performance segment, with its Yangwang U9 Xtreme electric supercar commanding nearly $3 million at the Beijing Auto Show—making it the most expensive vehicle sold at the event.
The sale highlights how BYD, long associated with affordable EVs like the Seagull and Atto 3, is expanding beyond mass-market models into high-end niches. Alongside its core Dynasty and Ocean lineups, the company has been building out a portfolio of premium sub-brands, including Denza, Fang Cheng Bao, and Yangwang, the latter positioned as its most advanced and performance-focused division.
The U9 Xtreme sits at the top of that hierarchy.
Unveiled in production form at the show, the electric supercar delivers close to 3,000 horsepower from a quad-motor setup, built on a high-voltage 1,200V platform. BYD says the system produces 2,977 hp (2,220 kW), placing it among the most powerful EVs ever developed.

Performance claims are equally notable.
The U9 Xtreme reportedly reached a top speed of 496 km/h (308 mph), and BYD says it completed a lap of Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 59 seconds—positioning it as one of the fastest electric production vehicles on the track.
Production, however, is extremely limited.
Only 30 units of the U9 Xtreme will be built globally, raising questions about how it fits traditional definitions of a “production car.” At a price of over 20 million yuan (around $3 million), it represents a significant jump from the standard Yangwang U9, which starts at about 1.8 million yuan ($265,000) in China.
Beyond raw performance, the model also showcases BYD’s experimental technologies.
The car features the DiSus-X intelligent body control system, which enables unusual capabilities such as driving on three wheels, hopping, and performing synchronized “dance” movements—demonstrations aimed at highlighting suspension control and stability.
