Toyota’s Prius models got a complete makeover for the 2023 model year that brought new looks and further improvements in fuel efficiency for both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The five-seat hatchback’s new styling took it from years of being proudly eccentric to becoming newly sleek and sporty. Fuel-economy ratings went up for both versions, while the PHEV also got a significant bump in electric-only driving range.
The Prius, which has been an icon among hybrids for more than two decades, needed the makeover to continue to appeal to buyers as hybrid models — including popular SUVs — proliferate throughout automaker lineups.

2024 Trim Levels
The 2024 Prius and Prius Prime each carry over three trim levels that share mostly the same features at each level but have different labels. The Prius’ trims are LE, XLE and Limited; the more powerful Prime is positioned as the sportier version and gets Toyota’s sporty-model SE, XSE and XSE Premium badges.
Powertrain Specs and MPG
As for 2023, the 2024 Prius’ hybrid system combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor, front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission; its total system output is 194 horsepower. The Prius hybrid also offers an all-wheel-drive option for all trim levels that adds another electric motor to drive the rear wheels and has a combined output of 196 hp. A regenerative braking system is the primary charging system for the hybrid drive battery. The system has an EV-only mode for electric-only operation at low speeds under certain conditions, as well as three hybrid drive modes: Normal, Eco and Sport.
The 2024 Prius Prime carries over its 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with two more powerful electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission for a combined system output of 220 hp. The PHEV comes with a larger 13.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack that Toyota says can be recharged in about four hours on a Level 2 charger. The Prime only offers front-wheel drive.
As always, the Prius’ claim to fame is excellent fuel efficiency, particularly in city driving, and the improved ratings from the 2023 model carry over. The 2024 Prius hybrid’s base LE with FWD is EPA-rated for 57 mpg combined, while the top two trim levels, which have bigger wheels and more weight, are rated for 52 mpg combined. The equivalent AWD variants are rated 54 mpg and 49 mpg, respectively.
The Prius Prime PHEV carries over its EPA ratings for the base SE trim, which gets 45 miles of electric-only range and 52 mpg combined when operating as a hybrid. The higher trims are rated for a 40-mile all-electric range and 48 mpg combined as a hybrid.
Tech Features and Options
The tech feature upgrades that came with the 2023 redesign carry over for 2024’s Prius and Prius Prime models. An 8-inch touchscreen media system is standard for each model’s two lower trim levels, and a 12.3-inch system is standard for the top trims and optional for the middle-grade variants. Both systems are powered by the new Toyota Audio Multimedia system and include standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Cloud-based navigation capability is included for all with a one-year trial (it’s available for the Prius’ LE trim), after which a Toyota Connected Services subscription is required. A 7-inch instrument display is standard.
Available with subscriptions are a 4G Wi-Fi hot spot and control of the headlights, locks and starting via the Toyota app. Standard USB-C ports include two in the front, two in the center console and two for the rear seat. A six-speaker audio system is standard, while the top trim level has an eight-speaker JBL premium system.
An additional gee-whiz tech option for the Prius Prime’s top XSE trim is a 185-watt solar panel roof that can provide some supplemental juice for the battery when parked or for accessories when on the road.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features and Options
The Prius and Prius Prime continue to have standard Safety Sense 3.0, Toyota’s latest-generation bundle of safety and driver-assistance tech features. It includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Also in the package is adaptive cruise control, lane departure and lane-centering steering, road-sign recognition and automatic high beams. A Proactive Driving Assist system (separate from automatic collision braking) provides gentle braking into curves and adjusts braking and steering inputs for tasks such as maintaining distance from a vehicle, pedestrian or bicyclist ahead. Also standard for all trim levels is a blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic warning.
Additional standard tech for the Prius Prime includes front cross-traffic alert and a Traffic Jam Assist system for hands-free driving in stop-and-go traffic under 25 mph, though a Toyota Drive Connect subscription is required.
The top two trim levels for the Prius and Prius Prime also get front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking; it’s optional on the base trims. An optional tech package is offered for the top Prius Limited and Prius Prime XSE Premium, which adds a 360-degree camera system, video rearview mirror, and automated parking assist for hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking.
