What is Full Truckload (FTL) Transport?

Full truckload (FTL) transport, as the name suggests, is a shipping method where the entire truck is dedicated to a single shipment. It is ideal for transporting bulky or large quantities of goods. By booking the entire truck, shippers can avoid the inconvenience of multiple stops and handling points, ensuring that the cargo remains intact from pick-up to delivery.

Advantages of Full Truckload Shipping

FTL offers several advantages over other shipping methods, especially when dealing with large shipments. One of the primary benefits is the significant reduction in transit time, as the truck does not make any additional stops. This mode of transport minimizes the risk of damage or loss because the goods are not transferred between different trucks. Moreover, FTL provides a more straightforward tracking process since there is only one shipment involved.

What is Less Than Truckload (LTL) Shipping?

Less than truckload (LTL) shipping is the opposite of FTL, primarily used for smaller shipments that do not require the full space of a truck. In this method, multiple shipments from different companies are combined in a single truck. This approach makes LTL cost-effective for shipping smaller quantities of goods, generally ranging from 150 to 15,000 pounds. However, LTL shipments may experience more handling and transit times due to multiple stops and transfers.

Key Differences Between FTL and LTL Shipping

The primary distinction between FTL and LTL shipping lies in the quantity and nature of the goods being transported. FTL is suited for large, bulky shipments where the entire truck is utilized, and minimal handling is preferred. Conversely, LTL is ideal for smaller shipments that can share space with others, making it a budget-friendly option. When choosing between FTL and LTL, consider the size of your shipment, the desired transit time, and the level of risk you are willing to accept.
