Introduction to Bentley’s Changing Direction

As Bentley steps into its second century, the newly appointed CEO, Frank-Steffen Walliser, shares insights about the marque’s shifting electric vehicle (EV) strategy. This change comes in response to fluctuating consumer preferences and market dynamics, aiming to ensure that Bentley remains at the forefront of the ultra-luxury automotive segment.

Revisiting the Beyond 100 Strategy

Originally unveiled in January 2020, Bentley’s Beyond 100 strategy ambitious commitment to sustainability was clear: only plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by 2026, culminating in a fully electrified range by 2030. However, Walliser acknowledges that the pace of EV adoption has not met expectations, leading to a reassessment of their plans. He emphasizes the need for flexibility, stating, “we cannot offer two cars where one is electric and one gas, in the same segment,” highlighting a shift towards prioritizing PHEVs like the Continental GT and Flying Spur.

The Future of Electric Vehicles at Bentley

Looking ahead, Walliser confirms that a fully electric Bentley is on the horizon, with the first model expected by 2027 and full electrification aimed for the mid-2030s. However, the CEO underscores that this transition will be gradual, influenced by consumer reception and market readiness. Bentley’s commitment to sustainable practices also includes exploring e-fuels, as they strive to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising the luxury experience for customers. Walliser’s strategic vision aims to balance innovation with tradition, ensuring that Bentley remains synonymous with luxury while evolving with technology.
