Overview of the Recall
Hyundai is recalling a total of more than 145,000 Ioniq and Genesis electric vehicles (EVs) due to a critical 12-volt battery charging issue. This defect poses a significant risk as it can cause the vehicles to lose drive power while on the road, increasing the potential for accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this issue stems from the integrated charging control unit (ICCU) which, due to an internal electrical fault, can suffer damage and lead to serious operational failures.
Details of the Affected Models
The recall specifically affects several models, including the 2022-2024 Ioniq 5, the 2023-2025 Ioniq 6, and the 2023-2025 Genesis GV60. In addition, the 2023-2025 Genesis GV70 (electrified) and the 2023-2024 Genesis G80 are also included in this recall. Once the ICCU fails, drivers will receive a series of warning alerts and the vehicle will subsequently enter a “fail-safe” mode, which reduces drive power gradually over a time frame of 20 to 40 minutes.
Next Steps for Affected Owners
Hyundai will reach out to owners of these affected vehicles via mail beginning in January. The company instructs owners to take their vehicles to authorized dealerships, where technicians will replace the damaged ICCU and the associated fuse, in addition to updating the vehicle’s software. This action aims to prevent future occurrences of overvoltage that could harm the ICCU. Importantly, Hyundai has committed to reimbursing owners for any out-of-pocket expenses related to this recall, demonstrating their dedication to customer safety and satisfaction.
