Overview of the New Funding Announcement

On February 25, the UK government took a significant step towards promoting sustainability in road transport with the announcement of an additional £120 million in funding aimed at accelerating the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative is part of a larger £2.3 billion package designed to support drivers, businesses, and fleet vehicles. Notably, the motorcycle industry will benefit from a £500 plug-in grant, extending for another year, to encourage the transition to electric bikes.

Challenges Facing the Motorcycle Industry

Despite the positive funding news, the motorcycle sector faces distinct challenges. Sales of electric motorcycles fell by 15.9% in February 2025 compared to the previous year, with only 299 registrations in the first two months. MCIA chair Neil Fletcher emphasized the need for clarity in policy, stating that the current uncertainty is detrimental to the motorcycle industry’s development. As the UK prepares for a combustion-engine phase-out by 2030, there remain unanswered questions regarding the future of electric motorcycles.

Expanding Opportunities for Electric Motorcycles

Industry leaders, such as Will Stirrup from Maeving Motorcycles, argue that a more open-source approach could benefit the sector. Enhancing government support and showcasing the advantages of electric two-wheelers could increase their popularity, especially in urban areas, where they offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to electric cars due to their smaller battery sizes. Stirrup’s vision for 2030 includes producing high-power electric bikes comparable to their traditional counterparts.
