Introducing the World’s Largest Industrial Heat Battery
Rondo Energy has officially kicked off commercial operations of what it claims to be the world’s largest industrial heat battery. This remarkable 100 MWh system is currently running at the Holmes Western Oil facility in California. Powered entirely by an onsite solar array, it demonstrates a sustainable way to deliver constant high-pressure steam and heat, revolutionizing heavy industry’s approach to energy.
Efficiency Meets Innovation
After just ten weeks of daily operation, this innovative heat battery has met every performance target, achieving over 97% round-trip efficiency and operating at temperatures over 1,000 °C (1,832 °F). The 100 MWh unit can provide the same volume of heat as 10,000 household heating systems. Rondo’s CEO, Eric Trusiewicz, expressed confidence in the success, stating, “The Rondo heat battery is now proven at industrial scale.” This advancement in energy storage and usage is a significant milestone in the world of renewable energy.
A Greener Future for Heavy Industry
The potential of Rondo’s heat battery technology to decarbonize the industrial sector is immense. By utilizing onsite solar to replace natural gas, the project at Holmes Western Oil not only helps hedge against energy price fluctuations but also drastically reduces carbon emissions. With industrial heat accounting for 25% of global energy use, this simple and effective solution opens the door for other industries to adopt renewable energy sources.
Rondo’s projects across four continents highlight its commitment to improving competitiveness and reducing environmental impact, showcasing how innovative technology can pave the way for a more sustainable future.
