Rivian’s Assurance on R2 Pricing

In a recent earnings call, Rivian’s founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe reassured stakeholders that despite current trade tensions and tariffs, the starting price for the anticipated R2 crossover will remain unchanged at $45,000. This announcement comes as multiple automakers, including Ford and General Motors, express concerns over the ramifications of the new 25% import duties on vehicles and components.

Navigating Trade Regulations

Scaringe emphasized that Rivian is monitoring evolving trade regulations closely, acknowledging the potential impact on material costs, availability, and overall demand for their vehicles. “We are not immune to the impacts of the global trade and economic situation,” he stated. The company has adjusted its 2025 delivery guidance to 40,000-46,000 vehicles, a reduction from an earlier projection of 46,000-51,000 units, indicating a cautious approach in light of current market dynamics.

Future Growth with the R2

Rivian is banking on the success of the R2 crossover for its next growth phase. Targeted to compete against established models like the Tesla Model Y, the R2 will feature options for single, dual, and tri-motor configurations and promise a range exceeding 300 miles. Production is slated to commence at Rivian’s Illinois plant in the first half of 2026.

To mitigate the impact of tariffs, Rivian plans to strategically source batteries domestically. Although initial plans include using batteries from South Korea’s LG Energy Solution, Scaringe revealed intentions to shift sourcing to a facility in Arizona by early 2027, optimizing manufacturing costs and efficiency.
