Innovative Approach to Sustainability

Suzuki Motor Corporation is making strides toward sustainability by exploring the use of cow dung as a potential fuel source for combustion vehicles. This initiative aligns with their broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the Indian market, while also delivering socioeconomic benefits by boosting rural incomes and improving living standards through the purchase of bovine waste.

Collaborative Efforts for Biogas Production

The Japanese company is in collaboration with India’s National Dairy Development Board to develop a biogas plant dedicated to producing and supplying energy derived from cow dung. Work on this project is scheduled to commence this year. The biogas generated will be utilized to fuel vehicles operating on compressed natural gas (CNG), which currently accounts for around 20% of the passenger car market in India.

Future of Fuel and Motorsports Innovations

During the recent EICMA trade show in Milan, Suzuki’s sales boss, Akira Kyuji, shared insights into this initiative. He highlighted the staggering 300 million cows in India, indicating the potential of cow dung as a viable fuel source, estimating that just ten cowpats could power a CNG vehicle for an entire day. While Suzuki acknowledges the importance of battery electric vehicles, they remain open to exploring diverse technologies.

Moreover, for their motorcycle segment, Suzuki plans to deploy an experimental GSX-R1000R superbike at the upcoming Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race, showcasing a commitment to sustainability with 100% sustainable fuel and recycled materials. Through these efforts, Suzuki not only aims for greener vehicles but also to lead in sustainable innovations across the industry.
