The Sherwood Egbert Era

In the early 1960s, Studebaker embarked on an ambitious product blitz under the leadership of charismatic new CEO Sherwood Egbert. Egbert, originally appointed to diversify the company away from cars, found himself fervently reinvigorating Studebaker’s car business. Although the venture didn’t ultimately save the company, it did produce some remarkable vehicles such as the Avanti, Gran Turismo Hawk, and the innovative Studebaker Lark Daytona Wagonaire.

Innovative Design and Features

The 1963 Studebaker Lark Daytona Wagonaire stood out for its innovative design elements. Most notably, it featured a sliding rear roof inspired by the Scimitar concept car, which Brooks Stevens had developed. This sliding roof created a vast open space that could accommodate tall, bulky items, offering an open-air feel similar to a convertible. Due to Egbert’s efforts, the Wagonaire also came with several advanced features, including a powerful 289-cubic-inch V-8 engine, optional front disc brakes from Bendix, and an optional tailgate step, which is a feature seen in modern pickups.

The Impact of the Wagonaire

Despite Egbert’s daring initiatives and the innovative designs, these vehicles couldn’t turn around Studebaker’s fortunes. However, the 1963 Lark Daytona Wagonaire remains a testament to the company’s innovative spirit during its twilight years. This model, currently featured on Bring a Trailer, showcases the perfect blend of creativity and performance, reflecting Studebaker’s commitment to quality and innovation despite financial challenges. Today, vintage car enthusiasts and collectors highly regard it for its unique features and historical significance.

Collectible Appeal

The 1963 Studebaker Lark Daytona Wagonaire on sale is equipped with the potent 289-cubic-inch V-8 engine and adorned in a stunning ‘Rose Mist’ color. Such exemplary options make this model a highly sought-after collector’s item. Its robust build and innovative features contribute to its timeless appeal, making it a fascinating piece of automotive history.
